Before I begin ranting, I would like to say that I very much enjoy this book. I respect Ayn Rand as an author (based on her technique). But these characters, they frustrate me!
I have ventured into this topic before but I still have much more to say about it. Some authors have the belief that their characters are their puppettes, it is very clear to me that Ayn Rand strongly believes this. I do not like how she constructs them as such.
Yes, you are the author Ayn Rand. Yes, this is your book. But please, let your characters have a little freedom! Not everyone who does not support your beliefs is an idiot. That is not how the world works. I could understand some of them being idiotic, but all of them! It has become too much. I hate listening to their long paragraphs of utter none sense, simplicity is okay sometimes. In fact, simplicity tends to work really well (i.e. "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and even Harry Potter despite its length).
Sometimes it is not even the "antagonistic characters" that bother me, but Fransisco. I just want him to be concise (ever heard of that word Fransisco?). No, I get page long speeches that lose meaning due to the amount they are drawn out. I know that he is supposed to be this unbelievable genius (which is really annoying) but sometimes it really needs to be toned down. He is not even in the book that often and yet he still manages to make it drag. I really find it hard to have any feelings towards his character, he is just awful. Even in the moments Ayn Rand tries to put good into him, I still find him intolerable. I do not care that he loves Dagny, and I am a sucker for unrequited love stories (if I can somewhat call it that).
But otherwise, I do very much enjoy this book. I am glad to be reading it.
