In
chapter IV of Atlas Shrugged, there is
one incident that shows how Hank Rearden has changed into a greater and smarter
man than who he was in the beginning of the story. In this incident, we see Hank having Thanksgiving dinner
with his family. As we learned
from the beginning of the story, we know that Hank’s family tries to make him
feel inferior to them and act like he is a failure. Usually, Hank just listens and does not respond but at this
dinner Hank finally fights back against his family. I like this scene a lot because it shows Hank is actually
the strong and confident man that we want him to be. During dinner Hank’s brother, Philip, starts bringing Hank
down by saying he is guilty for everything he has been doing. This is when Henry cannot take it
anymore and says, “Philip,”… “say any of that again and you will find yourself
out in the street, right now, with the suit you’ve got on your back, with
whatever change you’ve got in your pocket and nothing else,” (page 433). I like when Hank does this because he
may not be the nicest to his family but he supports them and makes sure that
have money to do everything that they need to do. Even though Hank does all of this, his family does not
appreciate him and I do not like how they act around him. For example, his brother Phillip acts
so superior to Hank when in reality Hank is supporting his brother who does not
work because he cannot get a job.
Like any human being, Hank wants respect in his family, especially since
he is paying the bills for his family to live.
