Rand describes her characters personalities in
more details through actions than through description. This helps the reader
form his or her own opinion about each character. It can be said that all her
characters can be compared or contrasted. Dagny and Jim Taggart continue to be
complete opposites throughout the next four chapters of Atlas Shrugged. Jim Taggart was never in accordance with Dagny’s
plan to use Rearden metal to create the line. After discussion, she decided she
was going to carry on with he plan. When optimism began to appear after the
first run of the John Galt line, in which Dagny resigned and started her own
company to carry the project on, Jim began to take credit for it. He let
Cherryl Brooks believe that he had taken part in the success. This series of events
showed me my opinions on both characters. I am not fond of Jim and the way that
he takes acknowledgment for the line that is not his, especially after being so
stubborn on his sister’s decision to use the metal. He may not have been happy
with the thought, but could have gone about it in a different way. The only
reason he took credit for it is because it was successful, and if it was not he
would have blamed the entire event on his sister, which he clearly states this
in the first few chapters. I also learned that I have admiration towards Dagny
because she is independent and she is able to carry out her plan whether her
brother agrees or not. She is also intelligent in knowing that it would work
and supporting Rearden from the beginning. This shows her character and the way
in which she will not give up on something she believes in.
