Dagny has always put her work in front of her relationships. I always knew this, but also knew that Lillian would find out about the
relationship between Rearden and Dagny. When she realized he had a mistress, I
knew it was going to happen soon and did not expect the response from Rearden.
Lillian was informed when she met with Jim Taggart and later confronted
Rearden. He refuses to end the relationship, regrets not getting a divorce from her earlier and tries hard to get one quickly, making sure she did not get anything from him. This was all occurring at
the same time in which he realized that his family is the reason he undermines
his morals for theirs. He then returns to what he loves, his work, and has to
sign his patent away. He would not want to, so he is threatened by Dr. Ferris
with photos of the relationship and Dagny’s reputation.
He does what would
benefit Dagny, meanwhile Dagny retired and is met by Francisco d’Anconia.
Rearden and d’Anconia had had a recent meeting in which they finally understood
each other. Francisco explained how he had only loved on person in his life. I
knew this would be Dagny from the moment he mentioned it. He visits her in the country
and professes his love. She understands why he destroyed his company (after he
explains that losing her respect was the most difficult part) and was ready to
move on with him. She then hears about the occurrences on the line and returns
to work. I find this interesting because she puts her work in front of the man
who she has loved since her childhood.
