My portrayal of Dagny

Dagny is my favorite character, by far. At the beginning of the novel all she cared about was the railroad and her work. As the story progresses, readers are privy to the fact that she is not only a boring, self righteous, control freak, but that she is a caring, unselfish woman who does have feelings for other things than her work. I feel bad for her because, through her characterization she appears to be a workaholic who has no feelings and acts like a machine, when in reality she is one of the most unselfish characters in the novel by far. She seemingly put others needs before her own. Dagny is a strong independent woman and I like how rand portrays her character. I like the ideas she presents about individualism and that a woman can succeed in the business world. She plays dirty when she needs too, resorting to conductive business meetings in inappropriate places. She does what she needs to do to get the job done. As one of the only important female characters, Rand does a great job of portraying Dagny by making her stick out among the men in a male dominated society. As a woman I appreciate how Rand incorporated a woman's presence in the business world, and how she didn't make Dagny a pushover. Dagny represents what I hope to be in the future.
