At this point in the novel, there are clear similarities
among the different characters. Dagny Taggart, Hank Rearden, and Francisco d’
Anconia show great interest in their work. Even at the wedding anniversary
party, Hank Rearden cannot seem to relax or enjoy the party because his mind is
preoccupied by business. Similarly, Dagny always seems to be concerned with the
well being of Taggart’s Transcontinental, and correcting the irrational
decisions of her brother. The only time I have noticed Dagny satisfy herself is
when she shares a love affair with Francisco. It is obvious that Dagny rarely
gratifies her own needs. I feel immense sympathy for this character; she is
always viewed as an over achieving bore. Dagny is ridiculed for having a high
position in Taggart’s Transcontinental, but in reality, without her efforts the
company would fail miserably. So far, Dagny is easily my favorite character. As
for her former lover Francisco d’ Anconia, I liked him at first but he has
turned out to be a scamming con artist. His vagueness is beyond obnoxious,
although it initially made him more attractive. When he explains himself to
Dagny, he refuses to give any reasoning for his incredibly unwise decisions. Unfortunately
for Dagny, this is the only man that seems to show any interest in her.
